Tourists Offered Petrol Subsidy

Sublime coast

08apr06

REMEMBER the days when you could wander along the beach without seeing another soul? When there was enough polished glass and pretty shells to ensure that you wouldn't feel guilty if you took some home? And when your sandcastle masterpiece was miraculously still there when you woke the following day?
Picture: Lake butler at Robe
Those blissful childhood memories are still being created in the seaside villages on the Limestone Coast.

While far-from-forgotten by the rest of the world, the South East still offers the solitude so many crave when it comes to seaside escapes. Part of the appeal lies in the variety of destinations – at least 15 coastal communities are located between Kingston and the Victorian border alone.

Visiting them has become more affordable thanks to a 60c per litre refund being offered for trips made between May 1 and September 30. The "cheap fuel offer" was launched last year by Limestone Coast Tourism in a bid to combat rising fuel prices and discount airlines and give visitors a reason to want to holiday in the South East.

"We don't want people to believe it's too expensive to travel by car," says regional marketing manager Peter Abbott.

"We're encouraging people to get out and see their own state, not jump in a plane." Read more.

Councillor John Legoe

It is with sadness that this web site announces the death, on December 8, 2005, from cancer, of Councillor John Legoe.

He was a member of the Kingston District Council for 12 years and served as its Chairman 1996-2001. Elected as President of The South Australian Local Government Association, he involved himself in projects to benefit, South Australia, the Limestone coast region and his beloved home town of Kingston S.E.

Following is a biography copied from the South Australian Local Government Association web site:

Passing of a Great Leader

8 December 2005

Immediate Past President Councillor John Legoe passed away this morning, 8 December 2005.

It is with sincere regret that the Local Government Association advises of the passing of its Immediate Past President Councillor John Legoe. John suffered a short illness (cancer related) but throughout showed enormous strength and courage. John is survived by his wife Gayle and two children. He passed away early today (8/12/05).

A Kingston (SE) grazier, John Legoe was President of the LGA from October 2003 to October 2005. John was a member of Kingston District Council in the South East since 1993 including 5 years as its Chairman. He was President of the South East Local Government Association and a member of the LGA State Executive since 2000.

During his time as LGA President John led local government through tremendous change. He was a fundamental force in delivering an additional $26.25 million of Federal funding to South Australian communities through Councils for local roads and led the LGA when it commissioned an Independent Inquiry into the Financial Sustainability of Local Government, the first of its type for Local Government in Australia.

John showed great enthusiasm for local communities and during his time as President spent a great deal of time with Councils and communities listening, trying to understand and responding to community needs. Having listened to communities he was also passionate about developing stronger working relationships between State and Local government and in 2004 signed with Premier Rann the first State/Local Relations agreement for more than a decade.

"John was a great leader of local government and was passionate about South Australia and the communities which we all serve. Today we have not only lost a great leader but we have lost a great mate." Mayor John Rich said.

"I know I speak for the whole of Local Government when I express sincere condolences to John's family and in particular his wife, Gayle and their children during this very difficult time." He said.

Australian $650m pulp mill planned

Pulp Mill for SA Plantation Gum Trees

Penola Pulp yesterday announced plans to build a AU$650 MILLION pulp mill west of Penola in the South East of South Australia, subject to government and council approvals. Penola is approximately 140 Kms south east of Kingston SE.

The project would generate more than 600 jobs during construction and employ 120 people permanently. It would produce 350,000 tonnes of pulp a year from about 700,000 tonnes of wood from locally grown blue gums.

A consortium of companies including Timbercorp, Orica, CellMark, Andritz and Silcar is supporting the project.

Penola Pulp project director John Roche said Australia imported $3 billion worth of pulp and paper a year and was at the same time the world's largest exporter of pulp chips.

Limestone Coast Regional Development Board chief executive Grant King said the announcement was "terrific news".

The project is expected to increase the value added to locally grown timber which is presently used for the less valuable wood chips exported mainly to Japan.

Geothermal energy for South Australia

Electricity from four kilometers under the Otway Basin
Scopenergy, which aims to operate a $160 million geothermal power station off the Limestone Coast near Millicent in south-eastern SA, has entered into a long-term power purchase agreement with Snowy Hydro for 40MW of electricity. Geothermal power is generated from naturally occurring hot water.
*
Mr Massey-Greene said the project had the potential to generate baseload power for the SA and national electricity markets. The proposed power station would use water from four kilometres underground, returning it after extracting the heat. There are 250 conventional geothermal electricity plants around the world, producing 8900MW of power.
