FROM some of the current crop of offers around, I've cherry-picked a few of the best (may be subject to availability).

At Tesco (until mid- August)

Tesco's Finest Howcroft Estate Cabernet/Merlot is half price at £3.99.

From the superior Limestone Coast of South Australia, this full-bodied red has intense blackberry jammy flavours with plums on the side, well-structured tannins and a hint of spice. Good accompaniment to rich red meats, full-flavoured pasta dishes and mature hard cheeses.........

Sainsbury's (until July 26)

Ever popular Australian Wolf Blass shiraz/cabernet, also chardonnay, are both down £2 to £4.99 and £5.49 respectively. Both are big, full-bodied, typical Ozzies to serve with smoky barbequed meats. The much lighter, crisper, Sanctuary Marlborough New Zealand sauvignon blanc is down £1.50 to £5.49. Its zippy, green gooseberry/leafy flavours would go well with asparagus, fish, chicken, fresh peas and beans. If you are having a party, the handy Hardy's three-litre bag-in-a-box chardonnay and shiraz are both down £3 to £14.99.
